Leadership Experience

I have always seen myself as a natural leader, taking on various leadership roles throughout my life. One of the most significant was serving as the team captain for our high school volleyball team from sophomore to senior year, despite having juniors and seniors on the team.

I faced immense pressure to lead us to back-to-back championships, but I am proud to say I rose to the challenge. From organizing morning exercises to addressing personal issues, I worked tirelessly to support my team. Additionally, I initiated a study group and implemented policies to promote attendance and punctuality, ensuring our success both on and off the court.

Leading an all-girl group came with its own challenges, including conflicts over positions and favoritism. Recognizing the need for unity, I organized a camp to foster stronger bonds among team members. Through constant reminders of each member’s importance, we found our rhythm as a team and went on to win four consecutive championships.

However, I acknowledge my imperfections as a leader. During my junior year, my rigid approach to training led to a teammate’s injury. Learning from this mistake, I became more consultative and open to feedback, prioritizing the well-being of my team above all else.

As a collaborator, I believe in adapting to different situations and leading by example. While I can be democratic, I am also willing to take decisive action when necessary. By encouraging open communication and feedback, I facilitated growth and improvement within our team.

In conclusion, effective leadership requires strong foundations, dedication, and collaboration from both leaders and team members. It is a continuous journey of learning and adaptation, with the ultimate goal of guiding individuals toward success.

Leadership Approach 

You might assume the primary goal of a volleyball team is to win. Yet, our vision extends beyond that. We aim to forge strong bonds among us, believing that unity is our pathway to triumphing in the championship. Our mantra, “teamwork makes the dream work,” underlines our focus on cultivating relationships both on and off the court through rigorous training and social gatherings.

Drawing from Blanchard, K., & Zigami, P. (1985), leadership transcends personal attributes, encapsulating the dynamic interplay between leaders, followers, and the surrounding context. As such, I view my leadership role as an ongoing journey of improvement. Effective leadership, in my view, entails recognizing and catering to individual team members’ needs, a principle we adhere to through our annual socialization initiatives and daily check-ins within smaller support groups.

These groups offer a safe space for sharing challenges and achievements, fostering a supportive team environment. Additionally, understanding the broader societal, organizational, and cultural contexts is crucial, especially in balancing academic and athletic commitments. To address this, I established an academic committee to support our athletes’ educational needs, ensuring they excel both in sports and studies.

Effective leadership also involves adapting strategies to ensure the team’s well-being, as illustrated by an episode where intensified training led to a teammate’s injury. This experience highlighted the importance of being attuned to the team’s needs and consulting with all stakeholders, including parents, school administration, and coaches, before implementing changes.

Kouzes, J. M., & Posner, B. Z. (2017) emphasize that leadership starts with finding one’s voice and aligning with shared values, which in turn guides organizational decisions. As captain, I set high standards, promoting a culture of excellence and open communication. This approach has led to significant achievements, such as forming an academic committee and organizing annual camps, which contributed to our consecutive championship wins. However, I’ve also learned from missteps, such as handling a teammate’s tardiness without considering her personal struggles, underscoring the importance of empathy and comprehensive consultation in decision-making.

In leading our team, I have prioritized communicating our vision and values, emphasizing excellence and respect, setting clear goals for each training session, and involving everyone in policy discussions and goal-setting. This collaborative approach ensures our team operates cohesively, striving for success together.

As a leader, I prioritize fostering collaboration, drawing on strategies outlined by Goman in a Forbes article, highlighting eight methods to enhance teamwork.

Firstly, I incentivize collaboration by setting specific goals for each practice. Achieving these goals rewards the team with extra playtime, such as perfecting a new routine to earn an additional 30 minutes.

Secondly, I ensure transparent communication, addressing issues like punctuality, performance, and academic challenges directly, facilitating an environment where information enhances collaboration rather than hindering it.

Thirdly, I promote networking by arranging tune-up games with other women’s volleyball teams, enriching our team with diverse strategies and techniques learned from others.

Fourthly, I emphasize the importance of alignment with unifying goals, constantly reminding the team of our objectives and adjusting our mission and strategies at the start of each school year to accommodate new members and experiences.

Fifthly, I drive innovation through diversity, particularly with our annual camp where team members contribute ideas and lead committees, fostering a culture where every individual’s talents, like a teammate who excelled in cooking and now owns a restaurant, are recognized and utilized.

Sixthly, without direct customers, our focus shifts to bringing pride to our school, a goal that unites and motivates us to excel both individually and collectively.

Seventhly, I build trust through open communication, addressing any issues that may impact team cohesion, such as clarifying selection processes to maintain trust and integrity within the team.

Eighthly, I adapt my leadership style from commanding to collaborative as the situation demands. While I may take charge during games, I adopt a more collaborative approach during timeouts and discussions, offering support and encouragement to boost team morale.

These practices have not only strengthened our connections but also propelled us to achieve our vision, culminating in winning back-to-back championships for our school. This approach to leadership and collaboration has proven instrumental in our success.
