Introduction
The Scenario
Under the tutelage of my nurse manager, I absorbed the principles of effective transformational leadership. Her support and encouragement were pivotal, making me eager to stay and contribute. She helped me envision the best version of myself and outlined paths to success. I was drawn to the secure and nurturing environment she cultivated, especially beneficial for the veterans we served. Constantly tasked with projects and mentorship roles, the nursing field’s challenges seemed surmountable because I never felt isolated. Serving both as a mentor and a coach, my nurse manager guided me in achieving immediate aims and pursuing long-term aspirations.
Transformational Behaviors
The quintessence of transformational leadership lies in being a compelling motivator and exemplary figure. Leaders ignite passion in their followers to set objectives and drive them towards notable achievements, actively involving them in the process of task execution and performance enhancement (Alqatawenh, 2018). Such leaders work closely with their team to boost their enthusiasm for delivering superior outcomes. For instance, faced with a demanding project or patient case, my leader provided ample guidance to restore my confidence and assurance in my ability to provide top-tier care. She motivated me to reevaluate challenging scenarios and navigate through obstacles to improve patient care significantly. Transformational leadership fosters a culture of trust in employees’ capabilities, offering them the chance to fulfill their responsibilities and achieve their objectives.
Echoing my earlier sentiments, my manager exemplified the role of both a mentor and a coach, giving personalized attention to ensure the developmental needs of each team member were met through targeted coaching and mentoring (Koveshnikov & Ehrnrooth, 2018). Transformational leaders make a concerted effort to forge meaningful relationships with their followers, promoting their engagement in professional or educational advancement opportunities. My nurse manager advocated for my participation in a preceptorship program to bolster my mentoring abilities. Her goal was for each of us to continually aspire towards self-improvement, embracing opportunities to acquire new skills and build on our strengths.
