This report will detail the objectives for the proposed work-life balance course aimed at newly oriented nurses, the selection of appropriate teaching methods, the identification of learning barriers and management techniques, and the influence of these teaching methods and management strategies on student motivation.

Learning Objectives

 The purpose of the work-life balance course is twofold: to familiarize new nurses with their roles within the healthcare setting and to provide them with strategies for maintaining a healthy work-life balance amidst the stresses of their profession. The underlying assumption is that all nurses, regardless of their experience, benefit from guidance on achieving a work-life balance, crucial for maintaining a healthy, sustainable workforce (Matsuo et al., 2021). The course aims to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate their work environment effectively, adopt practices that mitigate burnout and stress, and ultimately reduce the likelihood of leaving their positions due to these stressors.

Upon completing the course, learners will:

  • Understand the importance of work-life balance in nursing and its application across professional settings,
  • Identify signs of imbalance,
  • Learn about burnout, stress, and strategies for prevention,
  • Develop skills for managing diverse patient interactions to minimize stress,
  • Master techniques in time management and goal-setting,
  • Establish boundaries between professional and personal life,
  • Acquire strategies for stress management and resolving conflicts,
  • Discover efficient working methods in nursing practice.

 Effective Teaching Strategies

The course will utilize a blend of traditional classroom instruction, including lectures and PowerPoint presentations, and innovative methods like flipped classrooms. Traditional strategies are effective in presenting the theoretical foundations necessary for understanding work-life balance. This approach, rooted in the outcome-based education model, emphasizes key learning outcomes and ensures comprehension through self and educator assessments (Tan et al., 2018).

Complementing traditional methods, flipped classrooms offer a learner-centered approach that encourages active engagement and self-directed learning (Pangandaman et al., 2019). While the efficacy of combining team-based learning with flipped classrooms remains under investigation, such strategies, including role-playing and scenario simulation, are recognized for enhancing nursing competencies by mirroring real-life workplace scenarios (Tan et al., 2018; Pangandaman et al., 2019). Incorporating active learning allows nurses to apply theoretical knowledge directly in their practice, making education more relevant and engaging.

Addressing Learning Barriers Various barriers can impact learning, ranging from language and literacy challenges to personal and contextual issues (Mavuso, 2020). Effective education plans must include strategies for identifying and overcoming these barriers to ensure all students can benefit from the course.

Engaging students in workshops and active learning sessions, where they can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, increases engagement and highlights the relevance of course content.
